Public Speaking: Choosing a Topic

Before you prepare your public speaking
presentation, you need to pick a suitable topic. While choosing
topics for public speaking, you will
need to keep the type of audience in mind that you are going to
address. Remember - a
public speaking topic can either excite your audience or put them to
sleep, as dead as door nails. That’s why it becomes all the more
important to choose it wisely.
When you choose your topic, keep the
interests of your audience in mind. If you are addressing a
gathering of students, something like “Tips to get good grades”
would be an interesting concept. However, for a group of investors,
something like “Secrets of becoming a Billionaire Investor” would be
more appropriate. What I am trying to say here is that your public
speaking topic should have some call to action so that your audience
comes prepared to be active participants and not simply sit there
like lazy bums.
As I say in my book and
boot camp, all you want to do is connect with your audience AND make
them have fun while learning a precious thing or two from the
presentation. So, the key lies in choosing a topic that excites them
and makes them listen to you with wide-eyed and jaw-dropping
attention.
